Because it has become clear that events like RRATFR that attract large crowds are not feasible this summer, the Rock River Raft Race not-for-profit steering committee has reluctantly made the decision to cancel the 2020 running of Rock River Anything That Floats Race.

In addition, it would be difficult for teams to gather to build their floats as we continue to adhere to the
Illinois Stay at Home order.

The 5th Annual RRATFR was scheduled for Sunday, August 16, 2020, and racers who have already
registered will be given a full refund through EventBrite, including fees.

“We did not see a way forward to hosting a safe and enjoyable event in 2020. We did not want to cancel
something so many people look forward to – and we work so hard to deliver – but we literally have no
choice,” said Amy McIntyre, steering committee member.

“There is too much uncertainty around when
events like RRATFR will be able to take place this year – but it’s clear that the state and federal
governments is discouraging them this summer. The health and safety of our racers, spectators and fellow volunteers is of course our first priority. Those who have already registered their rafts will receive refunds through Eventbrite. Those with questions are invited to email us at info@rrarfr.com ”

“We look forward to returning bigger and better in 2021 because not only is the RRATFR an epic
community event, it also generates thousands of dollars to support the Fourth of July celebrations and the Rockford Ski Broncs,” said Mike Paterson, steering committee chair. “In 2019, $9,000 was presented to these organizations. We’re sorry we won’t be in a position to follow suit in 2020.”

“Events like RRATFR are crucial to the ‘Real Original’ character, economic development and growth of our community. The race is an exciting way to bring visitors and residents to our downtown,” said Jay Graham, steering committee member. “The Rock River Anything That Floats Race is above all a celebration of our inventive, creative spirit here in Rockford and we can’t wait to announce l it’s time to ‘Get Your Ship Together’ in 2021.”

About The Race – Initially launched in 1976 (U.S. Bicentennial) as a US. vs. Brits race, after two years
with only two teams, it was opened to the public. More than just an homage to the incredibly popular raft races of the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s – the all-new Rock River Anything That Floats Race has already become a new tradition for Rockfordians to love and experience.
