It seems the NFL anymore doesn’t have an offseason and even their offseason is full of news. To that end some big news broke over this past weekend.

On Sunday New Orleans QB Drew Brees announced via Instagram that after 20 seasons, the last 15 of which were with the New Orleans Saints, that he had decided to retire. Brees who is now 42 years old retires as the league’s all-time leader in passing yards. What this means for the Saints at the QB position now is interesting in that they were one of the team’s that Russell Wilson was willing to go to. Wilson has a similar skill set to Drew Brees and may be the best fit for the Saints offense. That is not something that Chicago Bears fans want to hear.

Speaking of the Chicago Bears they did some creative bookkeeping over the weekend and were able to convert the salaries for LB Khalil Mack, Safety Eddie Jackson, and OL Cody Whitehair into bonuses for this upcoming season. The move freed up $22.3 million for the Bears in cap space. The Bears then took some of that cap space and signed DL Mario Edwards Jr. to a 3 year deal in which he could earn up to $11.5 million.

The Bears NFC North rival the Green Bay Packers re-signed their RB Aaron Jones to a 4 year deal. The free agent to be will make $48 million over those 4 years and will get a $13 million dollar signing bonus.

The oddest move of the weekend came from the New England Patriots who announced they had signed QB Cam Newton to another 1 year deal. Newton struggled with the Pats last season as the Pats run of consecutive AFC East titles and playoff appearances came to an end. Newton’s contract has a base pay of $5.1 million with incentives and bonuses that could earn him up to $13.6 million
