The FDA (Food and Drug Administration)  and CDC (Center for Disease Control) made the announcement on Tuesday that they recommend “pausing” the use of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine after reports of blood clots. The clots occurred six to 13 days after patients received the vaccine. The clots were located in veins surrounding the brain.

As of Tuesday, 6.8 million doses of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine had been administered in the United States with six people experiencing the blood clots. All six were women. They ranged from 18-48-years-old.

As of Tuesday (4/13/21), the State of Illinois has followed the recommendation and paused the use of the J&J vaccine. If you received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine and are experiencing leg pain, abdominal pain, shortness of breath or a strong headache you should reach out to your primary care provider.
