NCAA Backs Transgender Athletes

The NCAA made a strong statement on Monday as the governing board stated they” firmly and unequivocally support the opportunity for transgender student-athletes to compete in college sports.” The NCAA went on to say that they won’t hold any championships in places that aren’t free of discrimination. That statement was taken by some to mean that in states that have adopted legislation banning transgender athletes the ability to compete in the sports they identify with that the NCAA will not hold any championship contests in those states.

The NCAA went on to discuss their policy on Transgender athletes which it called more inclusive. The NCAA requires testosterone suppression treatment for transgender women to compete in women’s sport. They believe this policy shows “inclusion and fairness can coexist for all student-athletes, including transgender athletes, at all levels of sport.”

Many advocates for Transgender rights viewed the statement as a welcomed development.
