POPLAR GROVE — Boone County Girl Scout Troop 2229 has donated a large portion of its cookie sale proceeds to the Northwestern Illinois Association, an organization that works with schools to ensure students in need have the tools and equipment they need.

The troop learned of the NIA through one of its members who is legally blind.

Troop 2229 presented a $1,000 donation to the group Monday at the Candlewick Lake Outpost in Poplar Grove.

Unfortunately, many kids in Boone County with many disabilities, not just being legally blind, need access to better tools,” Troop 2229 leader Shannon Long said in a news release. “Our troop chose to donate a portion of our Girl Scout Cookie proceeds, so they could help other children in our Boone County community get the necessary tools to continue.

All funds raised from local cookie sales stay in northern Illinois, according to the Girls Scouts of Northern Illinois. The 2021/22 cookie program begins Monday, Dec. 13 with online orders and in-person sales start Jan. 5.
