ROCKFORD — Gas prices in the city fell nearly 3 cents per gallon last week, according to a GasBuddy survey of 139 stations.

The average price of gas in Rockford sits at $3.41 per gallon, according to GasBuddy. That’s about 7 cents per gallon lower than last month and $1.34 higher than this time a year ago. It’s the highest per gallon price for fuel on Nov. 22 since 2012.

The survey shows a 45 cent per gallon difference between the lowest and highest priced stations in Rockford, which were $3.14 and $3.59 per gallon, respectively.

The national average price of gas fell nearly 2 cents per gallon last week, averaging $3.39 per gallon today. That’s $1.30 higher than this time a year ago.

“With oil prices plunging nearly $10 from the recent peak of $85 per barrel, motorists will start to see gas prices decline nationwide, just in time for Thanksgiving,” Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy, said in a news release, “and the decline could stretch for several weeks.”

If oil prices hold near the current level or continue falling, the national average price of gasoline could fall 15 to 30 cents per gallon over the coming weeks, according to De Haan.

“While there’s reason to be optimistic that the peak of gas prices will soon be behind us, the decline in the price of oil is likely reflecting the possibility of a coordinated global release of oil from strategic reserves,” he said. “If that doesn’t happen, oil could again rally. However, with COVID cases on the rise again reducing global demand, it does seem the most likely outcome will be a drop in gas prices that could last several weeks.”
