Why The Pick?
Washington Redskins & Chase Young at #2– This pick looks easy to make but the Redskins will have to make a trade or two if they do decide to take Chase Young. The Redskins traded up in last year’s draft to take Edge Rusher Montez Sweat and they still have Ryan Kerrigan under contract for only 1 more year. It makes sense to trade the 31 year old Ryan Kerrigan, an established pass rushing star, to make room for a new star on the edge while the team continues their rebuild. Go Young; Literally.
New York Giants & Isaiah Simmons at #4– Isaiah Simmons going fourth overall is very high for a linebacker and/or safety but the potential is there. The Giants hired Joe Judge as head coach and Patrick Graham as defensive coordinator, both have a history with Bill Belichick’s defensive scheme that favors athletic and versatile LBs and DBs. For a young Giants defense having a playmaker like Simmons to develop under a coaching staff familiar with his abilities will benefit this team that’s desperate for help in the back seven.
Arizona Cardinals & Derrick Brown at #8- It’s no secret that the Cardinals defensive line is horrible, drafting a strong and explosive defensive lineman like Brown is a necessity if the Cardinals want to compete for division title. Many believe that the Cardinals will take Wide Receiver Ceedee Lamb or an Offensive Tackle here but they’ve addressed the offense enough under Head Coach Kliff Klingsbury it’s time to give the defense some help. Derrick Brown brings the run stopping prowess to a team that has to deal with three run heavy powerhouses in the NFC West.
Indianapolis Colts and Tee Higgins at #13– The Colts have to decide to either stick with Jacoby Brissett or draft a quarterback here. I say they should draft a receiver then give Brissett or another free agent QB a shot. The Colts receiving core is lackluster and that includes tight end, Eric Ebron who is leaving in free agency. TY Hilton has yet to show he can produce without QB Andrew Luck. WR Parris Campbell is looking to be no more than a gadget/deep threat in the Colts offense. Tee Higgins has all the tools to be a #1 WR and has the ability to make big plays wherever he goes, that’s something this Colts team needs if they are going to compete for a playoff spot..

Denver Broncos and AJ Epenesa at #15– Since Vic Fangio took over as head coach for the Broncos drafting Epenesa here will be the biggest defensive upgrade for the team under his tenure. The Broncos are set to let breakout defensive tackle Shelby Harris and star cornerback Chris Harris Jr hit the free agent market and could very well lose both. Defense will be the top priority going into this draft and getting a technically sound lineman like Epenesa on Denver’s struggling defensive line is a step in the right direction.
Atlanta Falcons and K’Lavon Chaisson at #16- Dan Quinn has had his struggles with the Falcons and even though he’s a defensive minded Head Coach his defense has been bottom 10 in the NFL for too long. They drafted Edge Rusher Vic Beasley who had one productive year and is now heading to free agency. Then they drafted another Edge Rusher in Takkarist Mckinley who has yet to make his mark on the team, now they give Chaisson out of LSU a shot to become a star along the edge. Dan Quinn has always favored pure speed for his edge rushers and that’s what Chaisson brings: potentially being the fastest pass rusher this draft.
Miami Dolphins and D’andre Swift at #27– Taking Swift here would cap off a phenomenal first round for the Dolphins who already took Tua and Wills with their previous picks. The Dolphins running back core was hands down the worst unit in the NFL only topping 100 rushing yards as a team three times all year and quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick led the team in rushing! Swift is widely considered the best running back in a loaded draft class, he has a complete skill set and will be an immediate upgrade for a revamped Dolphins offense.
